Out scouting

March 30, 2007

Just the other day, I was out scouting for the new trail, and I took a photo across the Hudson River from the Spitzenberg, a craig on the east side of the river.

These may look like a bunch of bumps on a log to you, but in point of fact they are from left to right: Hook Mountain, High Tor, Little Tor and South Mountain. This is the route I blazed for the Long Path, some 45 years ago. High Tor had a tower then, now long gone.

In the 1960s, I worked on the Long Path.  My goal is to make a new trail before I push up daisies.  The Hudson Trail is in its infancy.  Anyone who wants to join in this effort is welcome.

Introduction

This is going to be a record on the work to build a new trail, on the east side of the Hudson River.  The southern trail head will be at High Bridge in northern Manhattan. The route will follow the Hudson River north over the Old Croton Aqueduct, then through various county and state parks, eventually crossing the Hudson at Schuylerville on its way to Mt. Marcy.
